The last time Hoyle laid hands on his daughter,

cousin Kenny was parked at the curb, crude-ing

growed up words with my thirteen-year-old mom

—meanwhile, Hoyle panthered the porch, dense

and glistening, saying better get your ass back

in this house fore I skin it, and when my mom

said no, boy did that big man move, got her arm

in his hand like a yearling, but she beat him to the belt,

snatched it clean out the loops, and he said, little girl

you better let that go, and when my mom said no,

she buckle-whipped his gut, and my mom tells me

all this like it’s sweet. Daddy wasn’t being vicious,

she says. Kenny was a real nasty boy. The blood

would’ve wrecked his shirt, if he’d been wearing one.
